Taylor,

It's a good idea to get interior designers involved early. In that way we can get everything on the table before design begins. I typically have a questionnaire and photos that I'll go over with the Owner and will also ask a lot of questions at the first meeting. Interior designers always bring a little something extra with their expertise and I might offer to bring them into the second meeting.

I'm a believer in form follows function. I want everything to function for the owners, then I'll work on molding it into a pleasing form. It's an added benefit to have an interior designer who is involved in both aspects. I've seen too often homes with beautiful exteriors that have interior spaces that are disorganized and a mess. Even the best interior designers can't make these spaces work.

Thanks for the comment and question!

John,

Just came across your blog and appreciate all your advice! I have contemplated using an interior designer for our future retirement home. I wondering if it is really necessary for their involvement so early on in the design of the house.
