I love that you have brought the Arts & Crafts style to the mountains! I grew up in a very detailed wood cabin and you don't see that much anymore.

Arts and Crafts style homes are more expensive than traditional homes, depending on the quantity and quality of construction. Gypsum wall board, which you see on most homes, is easy and cheap to buy and install. Once you start adding wood on the interior, it goes up exponentially with the amount of detail. The same goes for the outside. Redwood siding and stone veneer are much costlier than stucco. If you are comparing apples to apples, the same footprint and house shape, an Arts and Crafts style home could be 1.25 to 5 times costlier than a bare bones spec home, depending on the amount of detail. Then again, in the Arts and Crafts style home you'll feel more comfortable and the home will have a higher resale value.

Good article...following you on Twitter. I've always appreciated the Arts & Crafts style and the SF Bay Area where I grew up is seeped with such beautiful homes.

You really summed it up the reasons for the longevity of the Arts & Crafts movement and the influence and appeal that it has on people still to this day when you mention "natural materials, quality craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and honest expression". That's exactly it! In a time with pre-fab big-box everything, it's a breath of fresh air to see true craftsmanship, which is becoming rare.

Greene and Greene and Maybeck did such beautiful work. I would love to see more homes with this much architectural detail! I can see the similarity with the mountain style and shingle style.
